More than 1 in 3 American children start kindergarten without the skills they need to learn to read. â€‹

Your library can help!

Early literacy is all about helping your little one get ready to read before they even start school. It's the skills they build through everyday activities that prepare them for learning in PreK and beyond. At the library we love partnering with parents like you to make sure your child gets the best start.

There are five simple ways to boost early literacy: read, write, sing, talk, and play.

  • Reading together introduces your child to new words and ideas.

  • Writing, even scribbling, helps them understand that those funny marks on paper have meaning.

  • Singing breaks words down into smaller sounds.

  • Talking helps develop vocabulary and communication skills.

  • Playing encourages creativity and problem-solving.

Best of all, you're probably already doing these things every day! We're here to support you every step of the way. Let's work together to get your child ready for a lifetime of learning!
